Rihanna's American Oxygen is one of the more recent takes. It doesn't tread any new ground, but it's a good, solid album track by my books, and on screen she's always interesting to watch. Camera loves her blah blah blah.

You could spend a lifetime researching and curating the use of the words America and the USA in pop music. Someone probably already has. I can't think of any other country in the world whose artists so routinely address the States in their music. And the reception to those works and ideas is often really different depending on where you are geographically in the world.
Blisteringly patriotism vs edgy social commentary. The flag, that word and those ideas usually get thrown into one of those polarising categories.
